Wonder of the Winter Woodland

Story added 18 December 2009

Derry's Craft Village has undergone a magical transformation into a wondrous "Winter Woodland".

Operating from 12 - 5 each day until Christmas eve, the Craft Village will be transformed with Christmas trees and lights and animated characters in costume. The Winter Woodland will be an enchanted realm ruled over by the Snow King and the Ice Queen.

The Winter Woodland will be a truly interactive experience with story-tellers at the Christmas Cottage, workshops where children can write their Christmas wish on a special card and place it on the Christmas tree, design their own Christmas decoration and Museum Workshops with Christmas reminiscences and music and song. European community groups will show-off their festive cultural traditions bringing a truly international flavour to the city centre

There will be entertainment from Victorian characters that will tell the story of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. Santa's Post Box will allow children to let Father Christmas know what they want to see under their tree on Christmas morning. The Grove Theatre Company will perform scenes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and there will be daily performances by choirs from schools, churches and communities from across the city.

One of the big attractions will be the Victorian Carol Singers who will add that evocative Dickensian feel to proceedings and involve the public in their performances as Derek Watson of Northern Period Productions explained.

"Everything will be as authentic as possible, our costumes are rich enough and full enough and we have characters that can be easily identified," he said.

"We will be singing carols that identify with the port of Derry. Derry's a leisure port today but people forget that its heritage is that of a working port "I Saw Three Ships" and "The Big Ship Sails On The Ally Ally O". We'll be singing the old Carols that people can identify with, in the Deep Mid-Winter the Holly and the Ivy," he said.

The Winter Woodland opened on Saturday December 12 and will run right up until Christmas Eve.
