Derry Maps Out its Future

Story added 26 January 2010

slide

For the first time ever a detailed study of socio-economic data has been undertaken about all 30 city wards in the Derry City Council area. In partnership with NISRA (Northern Ireland Research Agency), Ilex has carried out a comprehensive exercise to establish the status quo and highlight future needs right across the city.

Information on the wards was collected from a wide variety of sources, both new and existing, to give an overall picture. Citizens will now be able to see at a glance where their ward is ranked across almost 100 socio-economic indicators including, age, ethnicity, gender, religion and disability. It is possible to check everything from the youngest average age (Shantallow West) to which ward has the highest population (Culmore).

Gerard McCleave, Ilex’s Director of Strategy and Regeneration, explained how the findings will impact on the regeneration programme: ‘This set of data gives the Sectoral Working Groups engaged in developing the Regeneration Plan the most up-to-date analysis of the city’s social and economic position. Its strength lies in its robustness, the scale at which it was set and the comprehensive nature of the work. Ilex believes it provides an unshakeable foundation upon which to build the regeneration of the city and will provide the baseline against which Derry ~ Londonderry’s progress can be measured over time.’

Statistical Briefing Reports are available for each ward offering information about age, disability, gender, family status and religion as well as detailed maps of ward boundaries.
