Peace Bridge Gets Under Way

Story added 27 January 2010

Peace Bridge Laying

On January 14th over 100 people gathered in the Waterfoot Hotel to hear deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, announce the start of the Peace Bridge. Outlining the importance of the Peace Bridge, Mr McGuinness said: "It represents a real opportunity to improve relationships by transcending the physical divide of the river which, for so long, has been viewed as a boundary between the Waterside and the city side".

The foot and cycle bride is the single biggest infrastructure project to be undertaken in the city since the Foyle Bridge was launched in 1984. Pat Colgan, Chief Executive of SEUPB (Special European Programmes Board) highlighted its importance within PEACE III, saying "The Peace Bridge is the most significant project to be funded through the European Union's PEACE III Programme. It symbolises the reconciliation of communities and the building of a shared society which lie at the heart of the programme. The bridge will provide an iconic legacy to the programme, the city and the people of the North West region".

At the event Sir Roy McNulty, Chairman of Ilex, explained that time lapse cameras have been installed at Ebrington and on the roof of the City Hotel so that all stages of construction can be captured. He also spoke of a time capsule project, details of which will soon be announced: "To mark this important milestone we are going to ask people to let Ilex know what they think should be included in a time capsule to be placed in Ebrington to mark the completion of this iconic project and to represent the city's history, its people, and their aspirations for the future. On the day the Peace Bridge opens, the time capsule will be buried near the flagpole on the Parade Ground at Ebrington".

The Peace Bridge will be ready by December 2010.

I can't believe people are complaining about the noise of the bridge being built! We're getting a 14 million pound bridge, the most significant piece of infrastructure in the city for decades and people want us to stop because they think its too noisy!?
