Twelve school children captivated an audience of 200 in the Everglades Hotel on 5 February with their hopes and aspirations for Derry~Londonderry in the year 2020.
They described a vibrant and cosmopolitan city full of life and culture with Parisian-style water buses sailing the river and the aroma from world class waterfront cafes and restaurants filling the air.
A place bursting with energy and beauty that has tourists flocking here to marvel at our historic city with its impromptu street performers, beautiful boutiques, electric nightlife and majestic riverside.
Emma Arbuckle from Oakgrove Integrated College summed up the mood on the day when she talked of a future "Where an area isn't defined by the colour of the kerbstones or the flags flying, rather by the amazing facilities within it".
Many of the young people spoke of their hopes for better education with an internationally renowned University at the forefront of innovation and creativity. They want this city to have "Opportunities pouring from the sky like the rain we know oh so much about" - Emmett Gallagher, St. Columb's College.
Arguably, the biggest cheer of the day went up when Jonathon McBay from St. Peter's High School said: "We need to be a city of more bling!"
We are a city of huge potential and this is the start of an exciting journey of transformation. To use the words of Michaela Duffy from St. Cecilia's College, "We need to start believing in it, talking a language of creativity and inspiration but, more importantly, of self belief".
