200 people gathered at a special event on 5 February at the Everglades Hotel to discuss the transformation of the city. The proposals will form the backbone of the Regeneration Plan which is currently being drafted by hundreds of people from Derry and beyond.
Local artist David Campbell from the Verbal Arts Centre added a unique flavour to the day as he drew a 10 foot long mural turning the ideas into a work of art. The mural depicts many of the current problems facing the city such as high unemployment, alcohol and substance abuse and a lack of opportunity for young people. However, it also paints a picture of a more positive future for all of us, a LegenDerry city. Pictures of the mural can be seen at www.yourcityyoursay.com/your_say.php and www.facebook.com/LEGENDERRY.CITY
The day was made particularly special by the involvement of twelve local school children who described the city of their dreams in 2020.
Over 1000 people have been involved in developing the Regeneration Plan since the launch of Future Search last year; a unique process aimed at combining the needs of the city into one unified plan. Involved in the process was a wide range of people including community groups, young people, citizens from the public and private sector and politicians. Ultimately, everyone has one goal in mind - to make this a better place to live, work, invest and visit.
The first draft of the Regeneration Plan will be released for public consultation in the coming months.
