VIPs dine out on City of Culture

Story added 31 March 2010

UK City of Culture 2013

Over 200 people attended a lunch at the City Hotel on 12 March to celebrate the city being shortlisted for the UK City of Culture 2013.

High-profile VIPs including Minister for Enterprise Arlene Foster and the US Economic Envoy to Northern Ireland Declan Kelly spoke of the city's unrivalled assets and pledged their support.

Mr Kelly outlined the huge potential for economic growth in the area: "I believe that Derry-Londonderry has an excellent chance of being selected, and I want to make sure that I will do everything possible to support the bid team during the months and days leading up to the decision and announcement".

Arlene Foster was equally enthusiastic and described the bid as a "fantastic opportunity for Londonderry to showcase its cultural offering to an international audience and for the city to display its enviable wealth of creative and artistic talent".

Sir Roy McNulty, Chairman of Ilex, talked of the importance of having confidence in ourselves and raising our game: "Ultimately, City of Culture would help us present a more positive profile of the city and region internationally, and significantly enhance the city's regeneration plans".

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness later joined the VIP's to visit the new City of Culture office. Centrally located to ensure high visibility and footfall, the office is located in the Northern Counties building between Waterloo Place and Guildhall Square. Members of the public are encouraged to come along to register their support and find out more about the bid.
