As momentum builds in the lead up to the final bid for City of Culture 2013, Derry City Council and Ilex are actively engaging with children and young people across the city and region. To date, youth clubs, community centres, cultural organisations, artists, schools, colleges, universities and many others are pledging their support for the bid by hosting workshops, seminars and innovative opportunities for creative exchange.
As part of this creative engagement, young people are being invited to become Cultural Detectives by investigating the existing cultural provision in the city, researching potential for creative and culturally rich experiences, highlighting gaps in provision and exploring potential for future programmes and practice.
To kick-start the process over 230 Year 10 pupils from St Columb's College have already been invited to participate in Cracking the Cultural Code and become Cultural Detectives. The Mission of Cultural Detectives is to:
- Register support on line - www.cityofculture2013.com
- Recruit friends and family in supporting the bid
- Research existing opportunities and gaps in provision
- Report their findings back to the bid team and recommend ideas for future provision and increased accessibility through programmes and practice.
Ursula Grimley, Head of Year, St Columb's College said: "St Columb's College has a record for cultural excellence, having educated many of the city’s cultural champions and we are delighted to support Derry City Council and Ilex by taking part in the Cultural Detectives initiative".
Noelle McAlinden, Creative Adviser, Ilex said: "The Cultural Detectives have a really important role to play as they will help us shape the final bid. In a city of almost 28,000 young people we need to ensure the bid reflects their needs, interests, hopes and ambitions. We're in this to win and together we can make it work. We're committed to providing access to a bigger, better, brighter, culturally inclusive future for everyone".
