Culture success sees City take Centre Stage

Story added 30 July 2010

City of Culture

The natives of this city have always felt that it was the centre of the universe and with the announcement that Derry~Londonderry has been named the UK City of Culture 2013, the media finally seems to have come around to our way of thinking.

Derry-Londonderry's success has allowed its citizens to bathe in the spotlight of positive media coverage, as newspapers, television and radio carried the story of the city's victory.

The headlines in local and national newspapers trumpeted the city's success as it saw off competition from the other three finalist cities - Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield.

'Onwards and upwards for the Maiden City' said the Irish Times. 'Derry united to clinch City of Culture win' read the Daily Mirror. 'Legenderry' exclaimed the Belfast Telegraph.

Speaking after he announced the winning city, UK Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said: "Whatever happens in the future, people will always remember this, that Derry~Londonderry was the first winner... Being the first puts the city on the map, not just in terms of the UK and Ireland but in terms of an international perspective”.

Roisin McDonough, CEO of the Arts Council of NI said, "Within Northern Ireland, Londonderry has long been recognised as the home of many of our greatest writers, artists and musicians and now, having been awarded the City of Culture title, 2013 will be the year when the rest of the world will get to hear about just how much Derry has to offer".

NI Culture minister Nelson McCausland emphasised the impact the title will have on the city when he said, "Derry will be put on the international cultural map".

As well as potentially bringing millions in revenue into the city and thousands of jobs, 2013 could also see the city host prestigious events including the Brit Awards and the Turner Prize.
