Citiscope

Citizens voice their opinions

Story added 29 September 2009

People across the Derry City Council area have expressed their views on the regeneration of the city in a wide-ranging survey carried out by Ilex, the city's urban regeneration company. The Citiscope survey covered areas such as health, income, education, wellbeing, transport, crime and safety and the data will provide Ilex, Derry City Council and social/community partners with accurate information on which to base decisions.

Eighty-five data collectors were recruited from local communities to interview 515 individuals selected at random and they found that interviewees were keen to have their opinions heard.

Nyree McMorris who interviewed people from the Waterside said: "People were glad to have a voice and were quite passionate when talking about some of the areas such as education, youth services and child services. It was good for people to put their concerns in writing and how they think the city should progress. It was definitely worthwhile. Hopefully, the city will become a better place to live."

Hugh Hastings interviewed people in the rural area and said that, such was the level of response to the 102 questions on the survey; it was often impossible to fit the interviews into the allotted 90-minute time slot. "People were very responsive, they took time. When we did the training we were told it could take an hour and a half but some of the interviews took three or four hours because people had so much to say".

Jennifer Scarlett interviewed respondents in the Greater North area of the city and also found that people weren't short of opinions. "People were eager to talk and able to put their point across. They have opinions they want to share but find it hard to get any feedback. Even though we stressed that this was a long survey people really wanted to take part and get their views heard".
