Because of the weather this city needs a splash of colour in the form of public art work to brighten people up. The stuff that has been done is of a good quality but it is mostly grey or wooden in structure- Derry needs a few big bold statements- just look at what art has done to transform Barcelona, and given the wealth of artistic in the city there is no shortage of homegrown talent to do it. Look how popular the murals in the Bogside and the Waterside have become with tourists. Furthermore we need to see development on the ground- no more reports into reports- just get up and do something as soon as possible after funding is secured- it can easily be withdrawn due to inaction. Also if there are further investments from abroad, ensure that any help or assistance given to the companies from Invest NI have strings attached. Too often businesses here have been heavily subsidised only to up sticks and move due to cheaper labour and running costs elsewhere, usually in Asia. There should be stipulations that they remain in the city for a specified number of years. It may also be time to look at setting up co-oeratives to help the unemployed using fertile council-owned land to grow local produce which can be marketed across Ireland and beyond. Could specialise in Derry spuds, fruit jams, cereals etc. Might be easier than you think- would generate profits locally for council and people and create employment. Furthermore the roads in the city are pretty rubbish although the DRD seem to be getting their act together now after years of non-action by Direct Rule Ministers. There should also be a vote taken of citizens in the city over the name of the city. That is democracy in action and a single name will develop the toursim and trade industries and make the city easier to market in future.

If you have seen the initiative that's been taken on the Creggan Eastway, I think that this could show the way that Derry's young people could ahve a showcase for their creative arts - many European cities allow grafitti artists to display their works on public spaces - could this work in Derry?
we definitely could use our neighbourhood better by having a say in use of green spaces and adding art. Give a section of green land in every area to the local school for a veg garden and nature area. Allotments for the interested and the elderly. They could definitely teach us about growing spuds. Art and play and sports areas should be designed by local people, give each parish a budget and see what they come up with.
Would be good to see some decent graffiti to equal the quality of the murals but show what young Derry has to offer- spill your art and soul. provos out, hoods out. Get painting. its your city. Take design rights away from the council quick!! What are those monoliths at the entrance to Derry about? We need more colour. Give our artists a forum and a budget put it to vote in the journal.
Did you see the story released on Friday (13.02.09) about the new public art project planned for the Ebrington sight in the near future? Really exciting stuff. Lets hope that this plan and the new footbridge get underway very soon.
